Make the most of your around-the-world travel to Bhutan
It’s a long way to get to Paro, Bhutan on your once in a lifetime tour of this Himalayan Shangri La. Whether you are coming to Bhutan via Pacific or Atlantic, you will have to change planes in Delhi or in Bangkok in order to board the Druk Airlines flight to Bhutan, the country’s national carrier holding monopoly on air traffic into Bhutan.
If you are going to come all this way it’s a good idea to break your trip on the way there or coming back from your Bhutan tour, to adjust to jet leg or to make the most of this long round-the-world journey.
One of the most rewarding options if flying across the Pacific is to tailor your international flight to Indochina and include at least one of Vietnam tours. While you can fly to both Hanoi and Saigon from the US, it’s best to tour only the north or the south of the country if on limited time.
Hanoi is your jumping off point for Ha Long Bay, one of Vietnam’s most impressive natural sites, a stunning bay studded with some 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald sea plied by picturesque junks, and a great place to start your tour of Vietnam.
Once in the north of Vietnam it makes sense to add a side trip to Hoi An, a charming ancient Cham seaport town of medieval style houses of the merchants, covered bridge and brightly painted pagodas and temples.
Not far from here, a must add on is the former imperial capital of Vietnam, Hué. From Hoi An you travel by Vietnam’s scenic Highway 1 passing through Da Nang, then traversing over Hai Van Pass down to the pretty fishing village of Lang Co.
In Hue you must tour the Imperial Palace, a UNESCO monument , and take a boat trip on the legendary Perfume River, sailing past shores lined with pagodas and villages.
You could continue to Saigon but the diversion could easily develop into another side trip, hence best to fly from here on to Siam Reap in Cambodia for a short Cambodia tour and couple days of sightseeing the temple ruins of the dramatic Angkor Wat.
You will not regret of making this stopover, especially since it’s a short hop flight from here to Bangkok, your point of departure for Paro, Bhutan.
